History

R.E.M. came out of Athens, Georgia, with a sound built on Peter Buck's ringing arpeggios, Mike Mills' high harmony, and a lead vocal that for years refused to be fully intelligible. The early records were murky on purpose: words half buried in the mix, songs that suggested a subject rather than stating one. By the time of Losing My Religion the method had sharpened without softening. That single is carried by a mandolin figure rather than a guitar riff, and its verse never settles into the shape a hit is supposed to have. Everybody Hurts went the opposite way, slow and plain, with the sentiment stated outright. Man on the Moon holds both impulses, a loose country lilt under a lyric that circles a joke nobody explains. The band moved from an independent label to a major without changing the writing, which is rare, and kept the four-way split of credits until the drummer left in the late nineties. The jangle and the vowels are what a listener recognises.
