History
The Shins write bright, densely worded pop songs that sound simpler than they are. James Mercer leads the project, and his high, clear voice carries melodies that keep taking the less obvious chord, over guitars that jangle rather than crunch. The band grew out of Albuquerque before settling into the wider American indie scene of the early 2000s. New Slang, a quiet acoustic track with brushed drums and a wounded lyric about leaving a small town, spread through film and word of mouth and became the song that introduced most people to them. Australia moves in the opposite direction, all forward momentum and stacked vocal harmony. Wincing the Night Away pushed the arrangements further into reverb and loops and gave them a genuine commercial peak. Simple Song, from the later period after Mercer rebuilt the lineup around himself, is the most direct thing they have recorded. What a listener recognises is the tension between a sunny surface and lyrics that are wordy, unhappy and often quite specific about disappointment.
