History
Fountains of Wayne wrote sharp, melodic guitar pop about ordinary American lives: commuters, office workers, bored suburban kids and people stuck in traffic. The band was built around the songwriting partnership of Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood, who took the name from a lawn-ornament shop in Wayne, New Jersey, and debuted in 1996 with a self-titled album that included Radiation Vibe. Their sound drew on the Beatles, the Kinks, Cheap Trick and the Cars: bright chords, big harmonies, tight hooks and a punkish energy under the polish. Utopia Parkway deepened the suburban storytelling, and Welcome Interstate Managers brought Stacy's Mom, a crunchy, winking hit whose video made them far better known than before and earned them Grammy attention. Schlesinger also had a separate career writing for film and television, including the title song of That Thing You Do!. He died in 2020. The songs stand out for wry, detailed lyrics, a warm vocal delivery, and choruses built with the care of classic power pop.
