History
Snow Patrol came together around Gary Lightbody in Dundee, made two albums that almost nobody heard, and then found the formula that defined British radio for a decade: a quiet, close-miked verse, a guitar figure that repeats until it becomes a mantra, and a chorus that opens out without ever shouting. Final Straw did it first with Run, a song built entirely on the delay between restraint and release. Eyes Open turned that into a phenomenon. Chasing Cars is almost nothing on paper, a handful of chords and a single image held for four minutes, and it became the most-played song of its decade on UK radio, helped by television but sustained by how easy it is to sing badly and mean it. Set the Fire to the Third Bar, a duet with Martha Wainwright, shows the other side of the band: two voices talking past each other over a slow build. What a listener recognises is the patience, the long approach to a very simple payoff.
