History
Сансара is a Yekaterinburg band whose catalogue runs from guitar indie rock to spoken word and dance-leaning electronics, held together by frontman and songwriter Sasha Gagarin. It was formed in 1997 by art school graduates who could barely play; the only trained musician in the early lineup was an accordion player, and the band tried to use the instrument far from its folk image. Vladimir Shakhrin of Чайф produced their early records, and in 2001 the song Всё возможно reached national radio. Through the 2000s the sound moved toward Ural romanticism and indie rock, then took sharp turns. Пожары in 2008 was a spoken word record, written largely with poet Sergei Danilov and given away free online, and 69 in 2009 was presented as a concert on a moving Yekaterinburg tram. Ilya Lagutenko praised that album, which began a long friendship with Мумий Тролль. Игла in 2012 dropped the electronics and brought back a lean, tough rock sound. Сансара is known for melancholy, literate songs and for keeping its city's scene connected, including through its own festival, Втроём легче.
