History

Manic Street Preachers came out of a South Wales mining town with punk aggression, a library of quotations and lyrics that argued about politics and history at a time when British guitar bands mostly did not. The early records were fast and abrasive, and the album they made in 1994 is about as bleak as British rock of that decade got. The disappearance of their lyricist and guitarist the following year changed the band: the songs that came after kept the political reading but moved into wide, string-backed choruses. A Design for Life opens with a line about libraries and working class self-education and turns it into a stadium chorus, and it remains their best-known song. If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next, named after a Spanish Civil War poster, went to number one in the UK, an unlikely fate for a song about volunteers leaving to fight fascism. Motorcycle Emptiness, from the debut, shows the earlier version: long, chiming guitar lines under a critique of consumer life.
