History
Creed formed in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1994, when high school friends Scott Stapp (vocals) and Mark Tremonti (guitar), who had reconnected at Florida State University, began writing songs together. They recruited bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips, settling into the post-grunge, hard rock and alternative metal sound that defined the band. They first performed as "Naked Toddler" before renaming themselves after Marshall's former band, Mattox Creed. Their independently released debut, My Own Prison (1997), produced four songs that each topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, an unprecedented feat for a debut album. Human Clay (1999) went diamond and delivered "With Arms Wide Open," which won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 2001. Weathered (2001) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and held that spot for eight weeks, tying a record shared with The Beatles. Creed has sold over 28 million records in the US and more than 53 million worldwide, ranking as the ninth best-selling act of the 2000s. The band split in 2004, reunited from 2009-2012, and reunited again in 2023.
