History

J Mascis and Lou Barlow played together in the Massachusetts hardcore band Deep Wound before starting Dinosaur in Amherst in 1984, with Murph on drums. The trio slowed hardcore down and laid a loud, bent, almost country-adjacent lead guitar over the top, while Mascis sang in a flat mumble that sounded bored even as the amplifiers behind him were anything but. You're Living All Over Me, released on SST in 1987, is where that combination locks into place, and "Freak Scene" from Bug in 1988 is the song most listeners meet first. A claim from a 1960s band called the Dinosaurs forced the "Jr." onto the name. Barlow was pushed out in 1989 and went on to Sebadoh, while Mascis kept the band running with other players through the next decade. The original three reunited in 2005 and have recorded steadily since.
