History
Screaming Trees formed in 1984 in Ellensburg, a small Washington town over 100 miles from Seattle, when brothers Gary Lee and Van Conner joined singer Mark Lanegan and drummer Mark Pickerel. The band took its name from an Electro-Harmonix effects pedal and rehearsed at the Conners' family video store before relocating to Seattle. Though grouped with the grunge scene, their sound leaned into hard rock and psychedelia rather than the darker tone of peers like Alice in Chains. Barrett Martin replaced Pickerel on drums in 1991, and guitarist Josh Homme (later of Queens of the Stone Age) briefly joined in 1996. Their 1992 album Sweet Oblivion produced the hit "Nearly Lost You," which appeared on the multi-platinum Singles soundtrack and reached number 5 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. The band split in 2000. Lanegan went on to collaborate with Kurt Cobain and Queens of the Stone Age before his death in 2022 at age 57.
