History

Mike McCready of Pearl Jam met bassist John Baker Saunders in rehab in Minneapolis in 1994 and brought him back to Seattle. They pulled in Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees on drums and Layne Staley of Alice in Chains to sing, and the four played local clubs as The Gacy Bunch before settling on the name Mad Season. Above came out on Columbia in 1995. It is slower and bluesier than anything either famous parent band was doing then, built on clean minor-key guitar figures and a walking bass with an upright feel, and Staley sings lower and more exposed than usual. "River of Deceit" is the track that stuck. Mark Lanegan appears on two songs. A second album was started and never finished. Saunders died in 1999 and Staley in 2002, which closed the project; the 1995 Moore Theatre show was released later.
