Early-eighties Californian hardcore grind from the 1980s: atonal dissonant bends, detuned sludge riff, clanking pick bass, aggressive and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Black Flag turned American hardcore from a local noise into a working circuit. The band came out of the Los Angeles suburbs and spent years driving to towns with no punk scene at all, playing halls and basements until one existed, and the network they left behind is the reason later independent bands could tour the country without a major label. The music matches that grind: short songs, guitar tuned toward a dry metallic scrape, tempos that lurch rather than gallop, and lyrics about boredom, work and being watched by police. Damaged is the record most people start with, and Rise Above states the whole position in one chorus. The line-up changed repeatedly, with Henry Rollins fronting the band through its best known period and Greg Ginn's guitar the one constant, and the later albums slowed down into something closer to sludge than to punk. Their own label, SST, put out much of the American underground of the decade.
