History
Alice in Chains formed in Seattle in 1987, built around guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney, who brought in bassist Mike Starr and singer Layne Staley. The band's name is a quirky piece of trivia in itself: Staley took it from his earlier glam-metal outfit, Alice N' Chains, and carried it over to the new lineup. Unlike most grunge peers, Alice in Chains leaned on heavy-metal roots rather than punk, pairing Cantrell's dark, minor-key riffs with Staley's tortured vocals and harmonies. Their 1990 debut, Facelift, broke through on the strength of "Man in the Box," and 1992's Dirt, with songs like "Rooster" and "Would?," became a defining album of the grunge era. Mike Starr was replaced by Mike Inez in 1993. The band went largely inactive after 1996 due to Staley's substance abuse, and he died in 2002. William DuVall joined as co-lead vocalist in 2006, and the band has continued recording and touring since, having sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.
