Reggaeton

anthemicswaggeringaggressive92–102 BPM

Reggaeton from the 2000s: clipped dembow snare, klaxon horn stab, brass synth hit, anthemic and swaggering in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Reggaeton traces back to Panama, where Jamaican and Barbadian workers who came to build the canal brought reggae with them, and by the late 1980s it was being sung in Spanish; one early hit, Renato's “El D.E.N.I”, dealt with the discrimination faced by English-speaking Black Panamanians. The style took its modern shape in Puerto Rico in the early 1990s under the plain name underground. DJ Playero and DJ Nelson built tracks on the Jamaican Dem Bow riddim, MCs rapped, toasted and sang over it in Spanish, and cassettes recorded in carports and housing projects such as Villa Kennedy were sold from car trunks. The best-known releases were DJ Negro's The Noise tapes, Playero 37, which introduced Daddy Yankee, and Ivy Queen's 1996 album En Mi Imperio. The authorities pushed back: in February 1995 police raided six San Juan record stores and seized hundreds of tapes under obscenity laws. The same year DJ Negro put out The Noise 3, labelled “Non-explicit lyrics” and clean right up to the last song. In 2004 the genre broke through across the United States and Europe, with Tego Calderón among its figures, and by the 2010s it had a place in mainstream Western pop.
