History
Maluma came out of Medellin as reggaeton was trading its rougher edges for something smoother and more pop-facing, and his voice suited that shift exactly: light, close to the microphone, sung rather than chanted, with the percussion pulled back to leave room for it. Felices los 4 is the clearest example of the approach, a dembow rhythm softened almost to lounge tempo under a melody written for radio. Hawai slowed things further into resentment and became one of his largest songs worldwide. Corazon and the collaborations around it showed how easily the same voice sits over Brazilian and Caribbean rhythms. He has worked steadily across borders, including with pop artists from well outside the Latin market, and Latin Grammy recognition and chart-topping albums followed. Listeners recognise the breathy delivery, the doubled vocal on every hook, and arrangements that keep the dembow present without ever letting it take the song over.
