History

Karol G came out of Medellín and spent years inside a reggaeton scene that had very little room for women at the front before her records forced the issue. Her voice is low and slightly grainy for the genre, and she uses that weight rather than fighting it, sitting under the dembow rather than riding on top of it. "Tusa" was the turning point, a heartbreak song with an English rap verse attached, built on a slow beat that leaves unusual amounts of silence. "Bichota" took the same low register and made it swaggering. "Provenza" went the other direction entirely, soft, sun-bleached and almost ambient in its restraint, and became the template for a whole run of quieter reggaeton. "Mañana Será Bonito" was the first all-Spanish-language album by a woman to reach number one on the Billboard 200. What identifies her is tone and pacing: unhurried delivery, a lot of air in the mix, and hooks that work at conversational volume.
