History

Manuel Turizo sings reggaeton in a low, unhurried baritone, and that restraint is the whole signature: where the genre usually pushes, he pulls back and lets the beat do the work. He comes from Monteria on Colombia's Caribbean coast and started out with songs recorded alongside his older brother, who has produced most of his catalogue. Una Lady Como Tu, an early single, set the pattern with a soft vocal over a minimal dembow. La Bachata moved him to a different rhythm altogether, a guitar-led bachata with a pop chorus, and it became one of the most streamed songs in the world in 2022. His arrangements stay sparse: a guitar or piano figure, a light percussion bed, almost no forcing of the voice. The lyrics are conversational and usually about one person rather than about status. That combination made him one of the reggaeton singers most likely to be played by radio formats that otherwise avoid the genre, and a frequent guest on other artists' tracks.
