History

Prince Royce sings bachata with the edges softened into pop: the requinto guitar still leads and the guira still keeps time, but the arrangements leave room for R&B phrasing and a light, unforced tenor. He grew up in the Bronx in a Dominican family, and that double footing shapes almost everything he records. His version of Stand by Me switched between English and Spanish verses over a bachata pattern and introduced a generation of listeners to the rhythm without asking them to learn anything first. Corazon Sin Cara works the other way around, a plain Spanish love song built simply enough to travel far past its own scene. Darte un Beso is the template most people recognise: a mid tempo bachata with a hook that behaves like a pop chorus. Along with a small group of contemporaries he moved bachata away from its rural, heartbroken origins and into the Latin mainstream, where it now sits beside reggaeton and urban pop rather than apart from them.
