History
Farruko has one of the most recognisable voices in reggaeton, a dry raspy delivery that sounds worn even on a bright track, and he has spent his career moving that voice between styles rather than settling into one. The early work sat in street reggaeton and Latin trap, heavy on the dembow pattern and on melodies sung just off the beat. Calma, in the version that travelled worldwide, pulled him into a softer melodic lane with acoustic guitar and a chorus built for repetition. Pepas went the opposite way entirely: four on the floor, a guaracha style bounce lifted from Latin club music rather than from reggaeton, a synth riff that does almost all the work, and a hook short enough to survive any language barrier. It became a festival record far outside Spanish speaking markets. He has also spoken publicly about his faith and about his discomfort with parts of his own catalogue, which gave the later material a noticeably different tone.
