History

Rauw Alejandro treats reggaeton as one option among several rather than as the whole plan. The Puerto Rican singer moves between the dembow pattern and material with more in common with 1980s freestyle, synth funk and R&B, and the switching is the point. Todo de Ti runs on a bright retro synth line with almost no reggaeton in it. Tattoo is straight romantic perreo. Punto 40 goes the other way, back to the rougher sound the genre had in the early 2000s, made with a voice from that era. Saturno pushed furthest into electronics and concept, Cosa Nuestra toward the older Latin songbook, and both reached number one on the Latin albums chart. He has taken a Latin Grammy. The singing is light and breathy rather than percussive, which lets it sit inside a track instead of riding on top of it. On stage he works first as a dancer, and the choreography is closer to a pop tour than to the genre's usual staging.
