History
Wisin & Yandel worked as a two-part machine: one voice barking, the other singing. The duo came up in Puerto Rico during reggaeton's first commercial wave, when the genre was moving out of the underground marquesinas and into radio, and their division of labour became a model that later acts copied. Wisin handles the aggressive rapped sections and the ad-libs, Yandel carries the melodic hooks in a lighter, more nasal tone, and the productions of that era place both over the dembow pattern with heavy synth bass and very little else competing for space. Rakata, from the Mas Flow sessions, is the raw version of that sound. Later albums smoothed it out, adding electronic and pop textures and international guests, and Los Extraterrestres won a Grammy in 2009. Abusadora and Follow the Leader show how far the formula travelled once the tempo and the bass stayed but the surroundings changed. The recognisable element remains the trade-off between the two voices, rough answering smooth over the same insistent beat.
