History

Ozuna sings reggaeton rather than raps it, and that choice is most of the reason the genre sounded different after him. His tenor is light, high and heavily processed, closer to a pop vocal than to the barked delivery of the older San Juan school, and he uses it for melodies that hold across a whole chorus instead of a chanted hook. The beats stay recognisably dembow, but the arrangements around them borrow from R&B and from bachata: clean guitar figures, soft pads, plenty of room in the mix. He came out of Puerto Rico and built his audience on video platforms before radio caught up, which pushed the songs toward immediate melodic payoff. Taki Taki carried him into the English-language market through a dance producer's track rather than a crossover of his own making. Se Preparó is closer to his home register, a smooth vocal riding a slow dembow, and that is the mode most Latin pop of the following years copied from him.
