History

Daddy Yankee came up in the San Juan underground of the 1990s, when reggaeton existed on copied cassettes and in marquesinas rather than on radio, and he did more than anyone to push that music out of Puerto Rico. His delivery is the signature: fast, clipped, heavily accented, riding just ahead of the dembow rhythm instead of settling into it, with hooks shouted rather than sung. Barrio Fino in 2004 was the record that carried it worldwide, and Gasolina became the track that people who had never heard the genre could still recognise from its first two bars. He kept adapting the formula afterwards, and a guest verse on Despacito in 2017 put him at the top of the American charts more than a decade after his first breakthrough, followed by Con Calma, a rework of an older dancehall hit. He announced the end of his performing career after a final tour in 2023, saying he was turning to his Christian faith.
