History

Anuel AA is one of the artists who moved Spanish language trap from leaked files to the top of the Latin charts. He came up in Puerto Rico posting tracks online, and the voice he settled on is unmistakable: nasal, heavily processed, sung and rapped at the same time so that the melody and the threat arrive in one line. The beats under him are slow, built on long 808 slides and a lot of empty space, which leaves the vocal exposed and makes the autotune part of the instrument rather than a repair. He served a prison sentence on a weapons charge and released his debut album the day he came out, which turned his slogan into a brand that ran across everything afterwards. China rebuilt a familiar English language pop hook into a posse track with most of the genre's biggest names on it, and Secreto took the same voice into softer, more melodic reggaeton. The catalogue moves between those two settings, street trap and radio reggaeton, without changing the delivery.
