Style recipe for Suno v5
Breakbeat
Classic breakbeat groove from the 1990s: funk break, chunky bass, filtered stabs, swaggering and playful in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Breakbeat is built on the drum break, the stretch of a funk, jazz or R&B record where the drummer plays alone, and that break gave the style its name. In the 1970s DJ Kool Herc played the same record on two turntables and switched between them to extend the break for dancers; Grandmaster Flash perfected the trick by marking the start and end of the break on the vinyl. James Brown's "Funky Drummer" and the Winstons' "Amen, Brother" became raw material, and the Amen break has since turned up in thousands of songs, while the Winstons never received royalties for it. By the 1980s cheaper technology let anyone with a tape recorder grab a break. In the early 1990s acid house producers used breaks to build breakbeat hardcore, which split into jungle and drum and bass, with Goldie's Timeless as a landmark. In 1994 Autechre answered the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, which defined rave music by its repetitive beats, with the Anti EP, programmed so its beats never repeated. Big beat from The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy and Fatboy Slim paired heavy breaks with four-on-the-floor kicks, and in the 2020s breakbeats became a signature of PinkPantheress.
