History

James Brown rebuilt popular music around rhythm. Where soul singers of his generation leaned on chord changes, he stripped the harmony back and let every instrument work as percussion, with the accent landing hard on the first beat of the bar. Papa's Got a Brand New Bag marked that shift in 1965, and by the time of Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine the songs were closer to extended grooves than to verses and choruses. He drilled his bands to an exacting standard, and the horn lines, the choked guitar chords and the interlocking bass and drum parts became the template for funk and, later, one of the most heavily sampled sources in hip hop. His live shows ran on stamina and showmanship, the screams and the sudden full band stops timed as precisely as the arrangements. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its first class in 1986, and the title Godfather of Soul stuck because the debt owed to him was real.
