History
Gnarls Barkley is an American duo formed in 2003-2004 in Atlanta, Georgia, pairing vocalist Cee-Lo Green (formerly of Goodie Mob) with producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton). Their sound blends soul, funk, alternative hip hop, and pop into a psychedelic, genre-crossing style built around Green's expressive voice and Danger Mouse's dense, sample-driven production. Their debut album, "St. Elsewhere" (2006), broke through worldwide on the strength of the single "Crazy," a song notable for becoming the first single ever to top the UK Singles Chart on download sales alone, before it was released on physical formats. "Crazy" also won the Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2007. The duo followed with a second album, "The Odd Couple" (2008), and were known for performing in elaborate themed costumes, often built around a different pop-culture or cinematic concept for each public appearance. Gnarls Barkley effectively went on hiatus after 2008, with both members returning to their solo careers.
