History
Jack Beats grew out of turntablism. The London project was started in 2007 by two competition DJs, Plus One of the Scratch Perverts and Beni G of the Mixologists, and that background shows in the music: chopped a cappellas, sharp edits and records built to be cut and layered live. Their sound rested on wobbly, distorted basslines, big breakdowns and vocal fragments, moving between fidget house, electro, dubstep and later deeper house as club fashions shifted. The U.F.O. EP caught the moment when UK producers were pushing house into rougher, bass-first territory, and their remixes for artists including Beyoncé, Major Lazer and Flux Pavilion carried the name well beyond the underground. In 2014 they mixed FabricLive.74, a snapshot of their bass house taste. Releases came through labels such as Cheap Thrills, Owsla and Night Bass, and the act played Coachella, Glastonbury and Sónar. Since around 2015 Beni G has carried Jack Beats on stage, while the sound stays tied to that mix of DJ craft and heavy low end.
