History
Laidback Luke is the Dutch producer and DJ behind a punchy, groove-first take on electro and Dutch house, and one of the scene's most active mentors. Born in the Philippines and raised in the Netherlands, he started producing in the 1990s and settled on house, where his tracks became known for tight, clicky drums, bright stabs and basslines that bounce rather than rumble. Through his Mixmash label and his long-running online forum he gave feedback and releases to younger producers, and several later stars of Dutch house came through that circle. His 2009 remake of 'Show Me Love' with Steve Angello, built on the Robin S classic, was a big club record of the period, and 'Turbulence' with Steve Aoki and Lil Jon in 2011 carried the brash festival style of those years. He is also known outside music as a dedicated kung fu practitioner. His productions are recognised by their clean, crisp mixdowns, playful synth hooks and a sense of swing that keeps even the biggest drops danceable rather than just loud.
