History

LMFAO made party records with no interest in subtlety: four-on-the-floor electro house, a synth lead set to maximum, and shouted hooks written to be chanted back by a crowd already several drinks in. The duo were family, an uncle and a nephew working out of Los Angeles, and the persona leaned on absurd outfits and a deliberate refusal to take anything seriously. Party Rock Anthem turned into the defining club song of its year, helped by a video that pushed the shuffle dance into schoolyards worldwide, and it stayed on top of the American chart long enough to finish as the biggest single of 2011. Sexy and I Know It worked the same formula over a slower stomp, with a joke carried entirely by delivery. Shots, earlier and cruder, shows where the sound started. The tracks are simple by design: a filtered build, a hard drop, a hook of four or five words. The pair stopped working together not long after their peak, but their template ran through mainstream dance pop for years.
