History
Amon Tobin (full name Amon Adonai Santos de Araújo Tobin, born February 7, 1972, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is an electronic musician, composer and producer known for intricate sound design built almost entirely from manipulated samples and field recordings rather than synthesizers. He first surfaced in the mid-1990s under the alias Cujo before signing to the London label Ninja Tune in 1996, where he released eight studio albums blending trip hop, drum and bass, nu jazz, and musique concrète. Supermodified (2000) became his commercial breakthrough; Foley Room (2007) was built entirely from field recordings, including sessions with the Kronos Quartet; and ISAM (2011) abandoned samples altogether for invented, processed sounds, paired with a widely praised 3D-projection-mapped live show. He also composed the score for Ubisoft's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and recorded hip-hop material as Two Fingers with producer Doubleclick. Tobin relocated to Montreal in 2002 and continues releasing music, including 2022's A Living Room for Meow Wolf's Omega Mart installation.
