History
Alva Noto is the recording alias of Carsten Nicolai, a German artist and musician born in 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz) and based in Berlin. Trained in landscape architecture, he brought a background in geology and mathematics into a minimalist, reductionist strain of electronic music built from precise clicks, sine tones, and glitch textures. In 1994 he founded the label NOTON, which merged with Frank Bretschneider and Olaf Bender's Raster Music in 1999 to form Raster-Noton, a defining hub of German experimental electronica through the 2000s. His best-known body of work is a long-running duo with pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto, producing the albums Vrioon (2002), Insen (2005), and Summvs (2011), which paired Sakamoto's piano with Nicolai's granular digital sound. That partnership led to their Golden Globe- and Grammy-nominated score for the 2015 film The Revenant. He has also recorded as ANBB with Einstürzende Neubauten's Blixa Bargeld and as Cyclo with Ryoji Ikeda, and performs his audiovisual work in museums including Tate Modern and the Guggenheim.
