History
Jlin is the stage name of Jerrilynn Patton, an American electronic musician born July 30, 1987, in Gary, Indiana. She began producing tracks in 2008 while working at a local steel mill, drawing early encouragement from Chicago footwork pioneer DJ Rashad. Her 2011 track "Erotic Heat," released on Planet Mu's Bangs & Works Vol. 2 compilation, introduced her to a wider audience and was later used to soundtrack a Rick Owens fashion show. Jlin's 2015 debut album Dark Energy helped push footwork's rapid, polyrhythmic percussion beyond Chicago's dance scene and onto the global experimental-electronic stage; her 2017 follow-up Black Origami featured William Basinski and Holly Herndon. She has since moved fluidly between club music and concert composition, scoring Wayne McGregor's ballet Autobiography and writing for Third Coast Percussion. In 2023 she became a Pulitzer Prize for Music finalist for her piece "Perspective," and her 2024 album Akoma featured Björk, Philip Glass, and the Kronos Quartet.
