History
The Black Dog is a British electronic music group formed in Sheffield, England, in 1989 by Ken Downie, Ed Handley, and Andy Turner. Emerging from the city's post-industrial techno scene, the trio helped pioneer "home listening" electronic music, treating techno as an album-oriented art form rather than pure dance-floor fuel, blending early techno and electro with odd time signatures and dense atmospherics. After self-released EPs including Virtual and Age of Slack, they signed to Warp Records in 1993, appearing on the label's influential Artificial Intelligence compilations and releasing the albums Bytes (1993) and Spanners (1995). The group also remixed tracks for Björk, including "Sweet Intuition" and "Charlene." In 1995, Handley and Turner departed to focus on their duo Plaid, while Downie continued The Black Dog alone and, from 2001, with Martin and Richard Dust of Dust Science Recordings, releasing further albums such as Post-Truth (2018). Ken Downie died in December 2025.
