History
Prefuse 73 is the main recording name of American producer Guillermo Scott Herren, born in Miami, Florida, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, with Catalan, Irish, and Cuban roots. After early hip-hop production work in Atlanta and a stint DJing at the club MJQ, Herren moved to New York and began releasing music in the late 1990s, first as Delarosa & Asora, then in 2000 as Savath & Savalas. He launched Prefuse 73 in 2001 with Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, a record that fused chopped-up hip-hop vocals, glitchy IDM production, and live instrumentation, drawing wide critical acclaim. 2003's One Word Extinguisher remains his best-known album. Signed to Warp Records, Herren built a catalog spanning alternative hip-hop, trip hop, electroacoustic, and ambient styles, and worked under several other aliases (Piano Overlord, Ahmad Szabo) and group projects, including Diamond Watch Wrists with Hella drummer Zach Hill and the supergroup Risil, featuring members of Sunn O))), School of Seven Bells, and Pivot. He has remixed artists including TV on the Radio and Amon Tobin, and collaborated with the Flaming Lips.
