History

Shigeto is the recording name of Zachary Shigeto Saginaw, a Japanese American electronic musician, drummer, and producer from Ann Arbor, Michigan. His middle name comes from his grandfather and means "to grow bigger" — a fitting tribute, since Saginaw was born prematurely at under a pound. He trained as a jazz drummer in New York before an arm injury from manual labor in London pushed him toward electronic production instead, on his brother's suggestion. Signed to Ghostly International, he debuted in 2010 with "Full Circle," followed by "Lineage" (2012), "No Better Time Than Now" (2013), "The New Monday" (2017), "Versions" (2019), and "Cherry Blossom Baby" (2024), fusing jazz, hip-hop, house, and IDM with live drumming layered over electronics. He moved to Detroit in 2013 and, with his brother Ben, co-founded the label Portage Garage Sounds, building a studio and public art space in a converted Hamtramck auto garage.
