History
Four Tet is the recording name of Kieran Hebden, an English electronic musician born in 1977 in Putney, London. He started out playing guitar in the post-rock band Fridge in the mid-1990s before launching Four Tet as a solo outlet, debuting with the 1998 single "Thirtysixtwentyfive" and the album Dialogue. His sound blends glitchy electronics with acoustic instrumentation, folk samples, jazz, and hip-hop-derived drum programming. The 2003 album Rounds became his breakthrough and is widely cited on best-of-the-decade lists; its success also saddled him with the journalist-coined label "folktronica," a term he has openly disliked for two decades. Hebden has built a long catalogue of collaborations, including recorded sessions with drummer Steve Reid, production work for Burial, Thom Yorke, and Neneh Cherry, and arranging Madlib's Sound Ancestors. His 2024-2025 album Three earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. More recently he has become known for high-profile joint DJ sets with Skrillex and Fred Again, including a headline Coachella appearance.
