History
Flying Lotus is the stage name of Steven Ellison, an American producer, DJ, filmmaker and rapper born October 7, 1983 in Los Angeles. He emerged from the LA beat scene in the mid-2000s, debuting with the album "1983" (2006) before breaking through with "Los Angeles" (2008) on Warp Records. His sound fuses hip-hop, experimental electronic music, and avant-garde jazz, most fully realized on "Cosmogramma" (2010), "Until the Quiet Comes" (2012), and "You're Dead!" (2014), the latter earning an average Metacritic score of 88. He founded the label Brainfeeder and has collaborated closely with bassist Thundercat. A genuinely notable thread: he comes from a jazz dynasty, grandson of songwriter Marilyn McLeod ("Love Hangover") and, through great-aunt Alice Coltrane, related by marriage to John Coltrane's family, making saxophonist Ravi Coltrane his cousin. In 2012 he secretly released a rap mixtape, "Duality," under the alias Captain Murphy before revealing his identity weeks later. He has since expanded into film directing, including "Ash" (2025).
