History
Aphex Twin is the stage name of Richard D. James, born 18 August 1971 in Limerick, Ireland and raised in Cornwall, England. He began DJing at free parties and clubs in South West England in the late 1980s and won early acclaim with the 1991 debut EP "Analogue Bubblebath," co-founding the independent label Rephlex Records that same year. His 1992 debut album "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" established him as a defining voice in ambient and techno, and he became closely associated with intelligent dance music (IDM) after moving to London in 1993 and signing to Warp Records. Through the 1990s he released prolifically under aliases including AFX, Polygon Window, and Caustic Window, reaching wider notice with the singles "Come to Daddy" and "Windowlicker." He has also used his own unsettling grinning face, superimposed onto other bodies, as a recurring visual motif in his videos and album art. In 2014, after over a decade away from albums, he released "Syro," which won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album and was shortlisted for the UK's Mercury Prize; James, known for avoiding public appearances, did not attend either ceremony.
