History
The first songs went up on TikTok in 2020, while their author was studying film in London, and they were short by design: ninety seconds, a whispered close-mic vocal, and a two-step or jungle break lifted from the late 1990s. "Just for Me" and "Pain" travelled fast, the second built on Sweet Female Attitude's "Flowers". The mixtape To Hell with It (2021) collected them, still with barely a track over two minutes. She won the BBC Sound of 2022 poll and the BRIT Rising Star award the same year. "Boy's a Liar Pt. 2" with Ice Spice (2023) went top three in both the UK and the US, and Heaven Knows (2023) was the first full album, including "Angel" from the Barbie soundtrack. The singing stays quiet and unforced throughout, sitting almost under the drums rather than over them: the break carries the energy, the voice carries the melody.
