Testament
Thrash metal from the 1980s: down-picked distorted guitars, galloping bass, double-kick drums, menacing and aggressive in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
Style: Thrash metal
History
Testament formed in Berkeley, California, in 1983, initially playing under the name Legacy before Atlantic/Megaforce-era pressure over a same-named rival forced the rename in 1986. Guitarist Eric Peterson has been the band's sole constant, alongside vocalist Chuck Billy, who joined in 1986 and has anchored every studio album since. Musically the band plays thrash metal, and is ranked among the genre's founding "second wave" acts alongside fellow Bay Area pioneers Exodus, Death Angel, and Forbidden. Their debut The Legacy (1987) and follow-ups The New Order (1988) and Practice What You Preach (1989) built their reputation, with Practice What You Preach becoming their first Billboard 200 entry; the 1992 single "Return to Serenity" remains their only US charting single. The lineup has churned constantly over four decades, cycling through guitarists like Alex Skolnick and drummers including Dave Lombardo and Gene Hoglan. In 2001, around the time Chuck Billy was diagnosed with and later recovered from germ cell seminoma, the band recorded First Strike Still Deadly with several former members. Testament has sold an estimated 1.4 million albums in the US and over 14 million worldwide, and their newest album, Para Bellum, came out in October 2025.
