History

The band grew around guitarist Kurt Vanderhoof at the start of the 1980s in Washington state, and ended up between two camps without belonging to either. The riffs came from thrash, fast and downpicked, but David Wayne sang over them high and piercing, in the traditional heavy metal manner rather than the bark most of their neighbours used. The self-titled debut appeared in 1984, first under their own steam and then through Elektra, which was rare for this kind of music at that moment. The Dark followed in 1986. Wayne left afterwards and Mike Howe took the microphone for Blessing in Disguise (1989), a more controlled record with the same guitar thinking behind it. The group has split and reassembled more than once, and both singers have since died, Wayne in 2005 and Howe in 2021. When anyone traces the line from traditional metal into thrash, the debut and The Dark are the two records that get named.
