History

Bay Area thrash took shape around San Francisco in the 1980s and starts with Exodus, formed in 1979. In November 1982 Exodus opened for an unsigned Los Angeles band called Metallica at the Old Waldorf. In February 1983 Metallica moved north into an El Cerrito house rented by Exodus manager Mark Whitaker, where they signed their first deal and wrote Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. When Dave Mustaine was removed that year, Exodus guitarist Kirk Hammett replaced him, and Mustaine went back south to form Megadeth. That web of shared members, tape trading and shows at venues like Ruthie's Inn in Berkeley held the scene together, with Testament and Death Angel in the same circle. The bands drew on the new wave of British heavy metal and early punk, Venom and the Misfits among them, and played faster and more intricately than anything heard before. Many of its guitarists, Hammett and Testament's Alex Skolnick included, had taken lessons from Joe Satriani in Berkeley. The scene also reached beyond thrash: Possessed's Seven Churches in 1985 is regarded as the first record to cross over into death metal, and the crossover thrash of Attitude Adjustment became a precursor of grindcore.
