History
Metallica formed in Los Angeles in 1981 when drummer Lars Ulrich placed a classified ad seeking musicians who shared his love of New Wave of British Heavy Metal, which vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield answered. The band soon relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area. Early lineups included guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney; Mustaine was fired in 1983 and replaced by Kirk Hammett just before the debut album Kill 'Em All, and Mustaine went on to found Megadeth. Bassist Cliff Burton died in a 1986 bus accident and was succeeded by Jason Newsted, with Robert Trujillo taking over on bass in 2003. Metallica became one of the pioneering thrash metal acts, part of the genre's so-called Big Four alongside Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer, known for driving tempos and aggressive musicianship on albums like Master of Puppets. Their 1991 self-titled record, nicknamed the Black Album, debuted at No. 1 and later became the first album certified double Diamond by the RIAA, with worldwide sales topping 30 million copies.
