History

Phoenix, Arizona, 1985: the band formed around bassist Phil Rind, who sang and wrote the words as well. Ignorance (1987) came out on Metal Blade with lyrics about surveillance, war and American politics at a point when most thrash was writing about war in the abstract, and the Surf Nicaragua EP a year later fitted the joke and the politics into one title. The American Way (1990) slowed things down on purpose, trading some speed for mid-tempo groove and a bounce that made the songs hit harder live. They split in the late 1990s, returned the following decade, and released Awakening in 2019 with Dave McClain back on drums after the intervening years in Machine Head. The sound has barely shifted across all of that: thick riffing played tight, a bass you can actually hear, and Rind's plain conversational delivery in place of a shriek.
