History
Dark Angel is an American thrash metal band formed in 1981 in Downey, California, originally under the name Shellshock before renaming in 1983. Emerging alongside the Los Angeles and Bay Area thrash scenes, the band built a cult following through relentless touring with acts like Slayer, Megadeth, Motorhead, and Possessed. Their sound, extremely fast, technically dense songs packed with tempo shifts and extended instrumental sections, earned them the nickname "The L.A. Caffeine Machine" and a reputation as pioneers of technical thrash metal. Drummer Gene Hoglan, later famous for his work with Death, Testament, and Strapping Young Lad, and guitarist Eric Meyer, the band's only member on every album, anchored the classic lineup alongside vocalist Ron Rinehart. Their 1986 album Darkness Descends is widely regarded as their defining statement, while 1989's Leave Scars became their only album to chart on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 159. A telling piece of trivia: Dave Mustaine once asked Meyer to join Megadeth, but he turned it down to stay with Dark Angel. The band broke up in 1992 and has since reunited twice.
