History
Whiplash formed in 1984 in Passaic, New Jersey, and became one of the first East Coast thrash metal bands to emerge from the 1980s US underground. Built around guitarist and vocalist Tony Portaro, the sole constant across four decades, the band's fast, aggressive style sits alongside acts like Overkill and Anthrax in the era's New York/New Jersey thrash scene. The original lineup of Portaro, drummer Tony Scaglione, and bassist Tony Bono recorded the debut album Power and Pain on Roadrunner Records in 1986, followed by Ticket to Mayhem (1987) and, with new singer Glenn Hansen, Insult to Injury (1989). After splitting up, Whiplash regrouped in 1995 for Cult of One, Sit Stand Kneel Prey, and Thrashback, broke up again in 1999, then reformed in 2007. One notable piece of trivia: drummer Tony Scaglione briefly filled in for Dave Lombardo in Slayer during their Reign in Blood tour. Despite never breaking into the mainstream, Whiplash has remained a touring fixture at European metal festivals, including Wacken Open Air.
