History
Vio-lence is an American thrash metal band formed in 1985 in the San Francisco Bay Area, initially known as Death Penalty before settling on their final name. Associated with the Bay Area thrash scene alongside Testament, Exodus, and Death Angel, the band is often credited as a leading force of thrash's "second wave." Their classic lineup, guitarists Phil Demmel and Robb Flynn, bassist Deen Dell, drummer Perry Strickland, and vocalist Sean Killian, recorded all three studio albums: Eternal Nightmare (1988), Oppressing the Masses (1990), and Nothing to Gain (1993). Eternal Nightmare remains their only entry on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 154 after selling over 30,000 copies. Notably, Atlantic Records objected to the lyrics of "Torture Tactics" on Oppressing the Masses and had the original pressing destroyed, forcing a reprint without the track. After splitting in 1994, Robb Flynn went on to found Machine Head, later joined by Demmel. Vio-lence reunited in 2019 and released the EP Let the World Burn in 2022.
