History
Heathen formed in San Francisco in 1984, when guitarist Lee Altus and drummer Carl Sacco, formerly of Metal Church, started the band; vocalist David White joined in 1985 and became the group's defining voice. Alongside Exodus, Testament, Forbidden, Death Angel, and Vio-lence, Heathen is credited as one of the leading acts of the Bay Area thrash metal scene of the mid-to-late 1980s. Their 1987 debut, Breaking the Silence (Combat Records), mixed thrash aggression with NWOBHM-style vocal melodies and acoustic passages; a cover of glam rockers Sweet's "Set Me Free" earned airplay on MTV's Headbangers Ball, an unusual crossover moment for a thrash band. The band toured with Megadeth, King Diamond, and Testament before lineup turmoil scattered the group; White returned for the more progressive Victims of Deception (1991, Roadrunner Records). Heathen split in 1993 but reunited in 2001 to play the Thrash of the Titans benefit concert for Testament singer Chuck Billy and Death guitarist Chuck Schuldiner. Since then the band has released The Evolution of Chaos (2009) and Empire of the Blind (2020), and continues to tour internationally.
