History
Flotsam and Jetsam are an American thrash metal band formed in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1981, initially under the name Paradox before settling on their current name in 1984. Drummer Kelly David-Smith and guitarists Pete Mello and Dave Goulder founded the group, later joined by bassist Jason Newsted and a growing lineup that expanded to a twin-guitar quintet by 1985. Their 1986 debut, Doomsday for the Deceiver, is regarded as a genre milestone of the second wave of thrash metal alongside acts like Testament and Death Angel. It also carries a famous piece of trivia: Kerrang! magazine broke its own five-K rating scale to award the album a 6K, a first in the publication's history. Newsted left the band the same year to join Metallica, replacing the late Cliff Burton. Flotsam and Jetsam continued with No Place for Disgrace (1988) and When the Storm Comes Down (1990), both charting on the Billboard 200, and have released fifteen studio albums to date, most recently I Am the Weapon (2024). Vocalist Eric A.K. Knutson has been the band's only constant member throughout its history.
