History
Anthrax formed in Queens, New York, in July 1981, founded by guitarists Scott Ian and Dan Lilker. The name came from a disease Ian spotted in a biology textbook. The band became one of the pillars of 1980s thrash metal, ranked among the genre's "Big Four" alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. Its classic mid-1980s lineup, Ian, drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello, guitarist Dan Spitz, and singer Joey Belladonna, defined the band's sound, though the vocalist chair changed hands repeatedly over the decades (Belladonna, then John Bush, later Belladonna again). Anthrax debuted with Fistful of Metal (1984) on Megaforce Records and went on to release eleven studio albums, with worldwide sales estimated around 10 million. A notable trait was the band's early embrace of hip-hop: in 1991 they teamed with Public Enemy for a thrash reworking of "Bring the Noise," a genuine rap-metal crossover single that reached No. 14 on the UK charts and is widely credited as a forerunner of the rap-metal and nu-metal movements. Ian and Benante remain the only members to appear on every studio album.
